Prevention Is the Best Medicine

The knowledge to keep your smile healthy for life.

Prevention is the cornerstone of good dental health. Our oral health education sessions give you the knowledge and techniques to look after your teeth and gums every day — reducing your risk of decay, gum disease, and other problems.

At Spixworth Dental Practice, our hygienists take the time to understand your individual needs and provide practical, tailored guidance that makes a real difference to your daily routine.

What Is Oral Health Education?

Oral health education is a one-to-one session with one of our qualified hygienists, designed to help you understand and improve the way you care for your teeth and gums at home. It is not a lecture — it is a practical, hands-on conversation tailored to your specific oral health needs.

During your session, your hygienist will:

  • Demonstrate correct brushing technique using the right type of toothbrush for your mouth
  • Show you how to clean between your teeth effectively using floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers
  • Identify areas you may be missing in your daily routine
  • Explain how diet, lifestyle, and habits affect your oral health
  • Answer any questions you have about caring for your teeth

These sessions are included as part of your hygiene appointments and can also be booked separately if you would like dedicated time to focus on improving your routine.

What's Covered?

Every session is tailored to you, but common topics include:

Brushing Technique

The right angle, pressure, and timing for effective brushing. We will recommend the best type of toothbrush — manual or electric — for your needs, and show you how to reach every surface.

Interdental Cleaning

Brushing alone only cleans about 60% of tooth surfaces. We will demonstrate flossing, interdental brushes, and water flossers to help you clean the spaces your toothbrush cannot reach.

Diet & Nutrition

Sugar and acidic foods are major causes of tooth decay and enamel erosion. We will discuss how your diet affects your teeth and offer practical advice on making better choices for your oral health.

Specialist Care

If you have dentures, implants, braces, or bridges, we will show you how to care for them properly. Children's oral health habits are also covered, helping parents build good routines from an early age.

We will also discuss fluoride use, mouthwash recommendations, and how often you should be visiting the hygienist based on your individual risk level.

Who Benefits?

Everyone benefits from oral health education — no matter how well you think you brush. However, it is especially valuable for:

  • Children — Building good oral hygiene habits from a young age sets children up for a lifetime of healthy teeth. Our hygienists make sessions fun, engaging, and age-appropriate.
  • Patients with gum disease — If you have been diagnosed with gingivitis or periodontitis, improving your daily routine is one of the most effective ways to manage the condition alongside professional treatment.
  • Patients with braces or implants — Orthodontic appliances and dental implants require specific cleaning techniques. We will show you exactly how to keep them clean and healthy.
  • Anyone wanting to improve — Even if your oral health is good, there is almost always room for improvement. Small changes to technique or routine can make a significant difference over time.

Why It Matters

The vast majority of dental problems — including decay, gum disease, and bad breath — are preventable with good daily care. Yet many people brush incorrectly, skip interdental cleaning, or are unaware of how their diet is affecting their teeth.

Regular oral health education sessions help to:

  • Reinforce and refresh good habits over time
  • Catch problems early before they become serious
  • Reduce your need for fillings, extractions, and other treatments
  • Save you time and money in the long run
  • Keep your gums healthy and your smile bright

At Spixworth Dental Practice, we believe that empowering our patients with knowledge is one of the most valuable things we can do. Oral health education is included as part of your hygiene appointments, so you receive up-to-date, personalised advice at every visit.
